Essay Contest!

The St. Louis Aquarium Foundation is announcing our 2nd Annual Aquatic Animal Essay Contest! Students in grades K-12 are invited to submit a 1-2 page written response to the question for their age group (drawings, if included, do not count as one of the written pages) for a chance to win free tickets to the St. Louis Aquarium and St. Louis Wheel.

Essays must be hand-written, in the student’s own writing*. Entries may be submitted by one of the following methods:
• Emailing photos of the hand-written essay to arodgers@stlaquariumfoundation.org by no later than 11:59 pm on Friday, April 16, 2021. Please make the subject of your email “Essay Contest – (student’s name) – (student’s grade level)”
• Dropping it off in person at the Conservation & Education Center welcome desk at Union Station (201 S. 18th Street, St. Louis, MO 63103) no later than 7 pm on Friday, April 16, 2021. Please label it with your child’s name and grade level.

Essay Topics:

Kindergarten-2nd grade Imagine you could turn into an ocean animal for one whole day! What animal would you choose to be? How would you spend your day?
3rd-5th grade Think of some existing adaptations of ocean animals. If you could design a new ocean animal, what 3 existing animal adaptations would you give your new animal that would help them survive?
6th-8th grade What might happen if sharks disappeared? Are sharks important? Should humans care about sharks? Explain why or why not.
9th-12th grade Is water conservation important to people who do not live on a beach or on the coast?Why or why not? What can people do to help keep our oceans clean and healthy?

Rules, Entry Instructions, & Prizes
Essays will be evaluated based on the creativity and skill in answering the question; spelling and grammar will be considered as well. Essays must be written by hand, by the student in their own words*. Please include the student’s name and grade level on the submission. One winner and two runners-up will be selected from each age group. First place winners will receive a certificate good for 4 free St. Louis Aquarium admissions, 4 free St. Louis Wheel admissions, and a $10 gift card to the Aquarium Gift Shop. The two runners-up in each age bracket will receive 2 free St. Louis Aquarium admissions and 2 free St. Louis Wheel admissions.
Essays must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian of any student under the age of 18. By submitting an essay, permission is granted for the St. Louis Aquarium Foundation to use the essays (and any corresponding artwork) on their website, social media pages, or for any publicity/marketing purposes.
